Vaucluse House by MPR Design Group « KARMATRENDZ

May 13th, 2012

The concept for this house was to reflect the topography and landform of the Sydney Habour basin. The house is expressed as a series of horizontal layers – the sandstone clad base echoes the stone cliffs that hug the inlets of Sydney Harbour.

The upper stories of planar white rendered forms respond to the strong northern light found in the southern hemisphere. Between the cantilevered white planes, full height low-E glazing captures the dramatic harbour views whilst maintaining a thermally efficient internal environment.

There was a conscious decision to contrast precise man made materials such as steel and glass with natural materials such as the locally hewn sandstone.

Located in a small scale suburban street, the four storey residence incorporates its primary living areas on the top floor taking advantage of 180 degree views of the city and harbour. With exposure to the north and west and the ability to open up completely to the outside, the house has effective cross ventilation negating the use of air conditioning.

NewSchool of Architecture and Design Team Wins First Place at …

May 13th, 2012

San Diego—May 10, 2012—A NewSchool of Architecture and Design (NSAD) team won the MCM Group Mock Firms International Skyscraper Award, the highest honor in the international 2012 Mock Firms Competition collegiate division held in Chicago May 3–4. The undergraduate team, which also won the titles of Top Sustainable Mock Firm and Top Architecture Mock Firm, was among six finalist teams in the competition’s college division, formally called the International Skyscraper division. The finalists also included a second NSAD team composed of graduate students.

The fourth annual Mock Firms Competition was held by Chicago Architecture Today, an LLC online publication reporting on architecture in Chicago and beyond. The winning team members, who named their mock firm Capsule Architecture Lab, are all undergraduate students in NSAD’s Bachelor of Architecture program: Monika Banakaite, Wilfred Briones, Brandon Nash, Lam Thanh Nguyen and Carlos Sandoval. The group’s NSAD faculty mentor was Raul Diaz, an associate with Roesling Nakamura Terada Architects. As the overall winner of the competition, the student team receives a $1,000 prize sponsored by the MCM Group International, an award-winning studio of planners and architects that has developed more than 2,000 projects around the world.  Their primary practice areas include sustainable design, leisure and tourism and cultural and heritage projects.

The other NSAD finalist team, SALT (Sustainable: Architecture: Landscape: Technology), was made up of graduate students in the Master of Architecture program: Ann Capinguian, Kevin Colbert, Daniel Kwak and Rodrigo Villalon. The group’s NSAD faculty mentor was Daniela Deutsch of the architecture firm exitecture.

“We are proud of our two student teams that demonstrated as finalists the quality and professionalism that we encourage in all our students,” said NSAD President Steve Altman. “At NSAD we have made global experience part of our mission. This competition, with its focus on a hypothetical project in China, was an opportunity for our students to show how they can successfully apply their technical and creative backgrounds at an international level.”

The competition, which includes a separate category for secondary school students, provides students with practice in creating and participating in a simulated architectural design firm in preparation for the work environment. Other finalist teams at the collegiate level were from Cornell University, Drexel University, Higher Technical School of Architecture (Spain), and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.  NSAD was the only school in this year’s college competition with more than one team represented in the finals.

For the competition, the collegiate teams developed a “mock” design/build firm and prepared a project proposal for a skyscraper based on the competition’s theme of “versatility,” which was defined as varied building uses and adaptability. The site of the conceptual project was Beijing, China. During the final competition, teams pitched their design concepts directly to some of the industry’s leading design/build professionals to receive immediate feedback and critique. The collegiate teams competed in the categories of marketing, construction, organization, engineering, architecture and sustainability, in addition to the top overall mock firm.

About the Winning Team’s project: The team’s project focuses on the site of the Beijing Olympic City that was developed for the 2008 Olympics. The student project redefines the principles of the cultural neighborhoods in a contemporary way, acknowledging the area’s original system of hutongs and residential courtyards.  The design replicates these same set of conditions through solutions that encourage social interaction and a dense community network, resulting in a better quality of life for the residents.  The final design incorporates establishment of an urbanscape ground floor that is linked to the subway system and serves as the base for a 1600′ tall mixed use high-rise.  The high-rise is composed of self sustaining methods such as harvesting and distributing water and electricity, and an air purifying building skin system.

Architecture || The St. Petersburg Eye by West 8 Design | The Swag …

May 10th, 2012

The city of St. Petersburg, Fl has recently released its top 3 choices in its design competition in to replace the old pier, which was opened in 1973. BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group), part of Belgium-based design group West 8, has proposed The St. Petersburg Eye, a.k.a. the “Wave”; a 127-foot high loop-like strucure, which resembles a giant ferris wheel, and is supposed to emphasize the rising nature of a wave.

The structure will feature a 90-foot atrium, as well as a museum, observation deck, playground, and swimming pool, compete with water slides. In total, there is 424,000 of space, with panoramic views on each side of St. Petersburg and the surrounding Tampa Bay.  Below is a statement from the architects themselves:

“The pier design we share here is a series of experience, including where it meets downtown, at the municipal marina, at the warm waters where the manatee swims, and at the unbelievable horizon of Tampa Bay. The experiences along the way provide an unfolding journey, and a part of the fun getting to the pier’s end. The People’s Pier culminates at what we call the St. Petersburg Eye – a totally unique structure that has four levels, each with infinite views, exceptional experiences, open-ended settings, and inspiring vistas.”

Check out pictures of the design below, and check out the architects’ official website here.
